How to Choose Diesel Generator Sets in High Altitude Areas?

The influence of the plateau area on diesel generators: the power of the prime mover decreases, the fuel consumption increases, and the thermal load increases, which have a great impact on the power of the generator set and the main electrical parameters. Even if it is a supercharged diesel generator, its main power has not changed due to the influence of plateau conditions, but the performance decline is reduced, and the problem still exists. Therefore, the fuel consumption rate, heat load increase, and reliability of the generator set can cause economic losses to users and the country to reach 100 million yuan each year, which seriously affects the social benefits of plateau areas and the effectiveness of military equipment guarantees.

Due to environmental factors, the performance and reliability of diesel generators have been severely reduced, while ordinary diesel generators are only suitable for use below 1000 meters above sea level. According to the GB/T2819 rules, the power correction method is adopted at altitudes above 1000m and below 3000m. Kent Power gives the following suggestions:

1. Due to the increase in altitude, the drop in power, and the increase in exhaust temperature, users should also consider the high altitude working ability of the diesel engine when choosing a diesel engine to strictly prevent overload operation. According to previous test results, it is proved that the exhaust supercharging method can be used for power compensation of diesel engines in plateau areas, and can improve smoke color, restore power, and reduce fuel consumption.

2. With the increase in altitude, the ambient temperature is lower than in plain areas. When the ambient temperature rises by 1000 m, the ambient temperature drops by about 0.6°C. Due to the thin air in the plateau, the starting performance of diesel engines is worse than in plain areas. When using, the user should take auxiliary starting measures corresponding to low temperature starting.

3. Due to the increase in altitude, the boiling point of water decreases, the air pressure of the cooling air and the quality of the cooling air decrease, and the heat dissipation per kilowatt per unit time increases, making the cooling conditions of the cooling system worse than plains. Under normal circumstances, the open cooling cycle is not suitable for high-altitude areas. When used at high altitudes, a closed cooling system can be used to increase the boiling point of the coolant.
